I Don’t Always Know What I’m Making When I Start

When I create, it takes me back to being that little kid sitting in my grandad’s lap, painting with him for hours.

I get lost in that memory when I’m creating. I don’t always know what I’m doing. The movement is instinctive.

I always know I’ll be adding faces, birds, and shapes, but family, instinct, and memory are what guide me.

The feeling and meaning usually come after the piece is created.

The final piece shows me the emotion I was feeling at the time.

And the poetry tends to follow after the piece is finished.

That is why I don’t try to force the meaning too early.

I let the work speak first.
