Lessons From the Trail: Teaching My Boys to Respect Nature

Nature is full of beautiful things. But just because something is beautiful doesn't mean it isn't dangerous.

One of my favorite things to do is go on nature hikes and explore new national parks and trails. On our hikes, my boys are always asking if they can eat certain things they find. My response is usually, "If it's not something we know from around home, don't eat it."

No matter where you go, berries can look very similar but be completely different and cause different reactions. That's why I always tell my boys not to eat anything in the wild unless we know exactly what it is. The same goes for mushrooms. Unless you're very familiar with them and can positively identify them, it's best to leave them alone.

I'm not a berryologist, lol. I can only share what I've learned from what I've been taught over the years.

Some of our favorite berries are blackberries. They grow around my dad's house, and we eat them up every summer. It's crazy how one plant can hurt you and cause a bad reaction, while another plant can help counter the effects of a harmful one.

One of the things I love most about nature is that there's always something new to learn. The more time you spend outdoors, the more you realize how amazing and complex the natural world really is.

I just love Mother Nature and all her beauty.
